Pepper, cardamom e-marketing from Jan 20

G.K. Nair

Kochi , Jan. 3

THE Union Commerce Minister, Mr Kamal Nath, will officially launch the Spices Board's direct electronic-marketing of organic pepper and cardamom on January 20.

The State Trading Corporation Ltd (STCL), which would be purchasing these commodities as per the quality specifications set by the Board and marketing them, has already bought 500 tonnes each of MG1 and TGBP from Wayanad Service Society and 500 tonnes of cardamom of superior grade of 7.5 mm plus from the auctions, Mr S. Kannan, Director- Marketing of the Board, told Business Line.

These products would be sold under the brand name `Flavourit'. While pepper and cardamom would be packaged in attractive pouches, food grade plastic tubes would be used for selling cured vanilla beans, which would be added later.

IDBI Bank has been selected as the financial institution to conduct the transactions, he said.

Advertising campaign and distribution network has been finalised. The cost for designing of the packs and the initial expenses on promotional activities were being met by the Board, he said.

The Board would decide and assure the quality of the products to the buyers' declared specifications besides ensuring prompt delivery, he said. STCL would sell these spices at mutually agreed prices between the Board and itself, he said.

The corporation would charge processing, packaging and transportation charges while a premium will be realised separately and it would be used exclusively for promotional activities, he said.

The idea of launching this campaign was to popularise the products in the domestic and international markets and to ensure better price to the growers for their good quality cardamom, pepper and vanilla, he said.

Based on the success of the marketing of these products, more spices would be added, he said.

The concept is gaining momentum in the international market. Indonesia, China, Sri Lanka etc are also planning to market their products through e-marketing, he added.
