Coimbatore , Jan. 3

COFFEE powder prices have been hiked by Rs 10 a kg to Rs 160 with immediate effect. Trade sources have hinted about the possibility of further hikes in the coming months, including one before the end of the month.

A leading trader told Business Line that the prices were tending to reach the level that prevailed a decade ago, when pure coffee powder at the retail end was quoted at Rs 200 a kg. "It may not reach Rs 200 a kg, but we are anticipating the rates to touch a high of Rs 180 before March-end.''

This is the fourth revision effected during the current fiscal. In April 2004, coffee powder quoted at Rs 130 a kg.

Blended coffee powder (coffee-chicory mix) rates have also been raised, between Rs 5 and Rs 10 a kg depending on the mix.Traders are quite upbeat about current price movement, but say that the consumer has started resisting the price hike.
