The workshop would try and disseminate information regarding implementation of TQM in the seafood industry.

Kochi , Jan. 3

IN its effort to create awareness on development of total quality management systems, the School of Industrial Fisheries of the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) is organising a workshop on Total Quality Management, specifically targeted at the seafood industry.

The workshop is mainly targeted at the stakeholders and the industry members who will have to work together in order to attain the stated objective of TQM, a press release here said. The workshop is scheduled to be held on January 13 and 14.

Given the increasing quality consciousness in the seafood industry with the advent of the HACCP guidelines promulgated by the US and the EU standards enunciated by European Union, the timing of the workshop is also seen as quite appropriate. TQM is an integrative philosophy of management for continuously improving product and process quality, to achieve customer satisfaction.

To become a truly global player, the release said, it follows that a firm's product systems and services must be of a higher quality than those of the competition, and adoption of TQM will enable the attainment of this objective. Keeping this objective in mind, the workshop would try and disseminate information regarding implementation of TQM in the seafood industry. The participants would also get an opportunity to understand the relevant aspects of quality management systems, namely TQM, HACCP as well as ISO specifications.

The endeavour also seeks to transfer the knowledge generated by the project on development of a total quality management system for sustainable growth of seafood trade from India.

The School of Industrial Fisheries, Cochin University of Science and Technology is currently undertaking a project called `Development of Total Quality Management systems for sustainable growth of seafood trade in India'.
