Bangalore , Jan. 3

AID continues to pour in from private and public sector companies in Karnataka for the relief of last week's tsunami victims, apart from a massive quantum of relief sent by the official State machinery.

HAL has said that it has handed over a cheque for Rs 3.40 crore, while BEL said that it has given a cheque for Rs 2.6 crore towards the Prime Minister's Relief Fund.

BEL's monetary contribution includes Rs 60 lakh as a day's salary from its employees.

Another Bangalore-based public sector company, Bharat Earth Movers Ltd, presented a cheque for Rs 50 lakh raised from its employees.

The All-India Granites and Stone Association, Bangalore raised Rs 10 lakh as contribution to the Chief Minister's Fund.

Pharma company Micro Labs Ltd said that it had rushed Rs 40 lakh worth of medicine such as antibiotics, painkillers, anti-diarrhoeals and anti-emetics.

These would be distributed to the affected people through the Rotary Club, IDMA, and Erode Small Industries Association, and the Nagapattinam general hospital.

Manipal group extends aid: The Manipal Education & Medical Group (MEMG) has announced a contribution of Rs 1 crore to Prime Minister's Relief Fund to help tsunami-hit victims.

This is in addition to Rs 1 crore donated to the Sri Lankan Prime Minister's Relief Fund. Dr Ramdas Pai, President, Manipal Education & Medical Group, said, "We believe it is our duty as corporate citizens to address such issues not just at home but also the suffering of our neighbours."

Apart from monetary contribution, MEMG has sent two teams of doctors and medical supplies to Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka.
