New Delhi , Jan. 3

SHARING a status report of the relief operations in the tsunami affected areas, the Government today said that its focus includes establishing communication network, drinking water, restoration of power supply and prevention of outbreak of epidemics.

A total of 8,300 troops are deployed for the relief and rescue effort as on date.

The National Calamity Contingency Fund (NCCF) has made available Rs 250 crore to Tamil Nadu, Rs 100 crore each to Andhra Pradesh and Kerala.

"Separately Rs 35 crore to Pondicherry and Rs 100 crore to Andaman and Nicobar Islands have also been given," the Information and Broadcasting Secretary, Mr Navin Chawla, said in press briefing.

"In the affected areas of Nicobar group of islands, 31 telephone exchanges have been made operational and 22 satellite phones are functional. Most of the affected islands have been connected with police wireless, which has enhanced the communication facilities. Forty per cent of the normal power supply has been restored in Port Blair," he added.

The ministries involved in the relief and rescue operations include the three defence wings, water resources, fisheries, health, road transport, civil aviation, shipping and home affairs, among others.

Pointing out that medical relief is under continuous surveillance, Mr Chawla said, "No report of outbreak of epidemics has been received so far."
