Reasons to cheer

This refers to the article `Pvt airlines allowed to fly overseas; Gulf excluded' (Business Line, December 30).

NRIs should rejoice at the news as, at present, they are forced to depend on the public sector resulting in occasional rumblings.

The decision should also cheer up the twin public sector operators — Air India and Indian Airlines. These companies should henceforth venture to win the confidence of the passengers by resorting to more passenger friendly acts.

The government seems to have disappointed the gulf-based NRIs, who have larger complaints regarding the present service offered by the public sector.

This is significant considering the fact that the bulk of profits of Air India as well as Indian Airlines depend on the gulf traffic.

The observation of the chairman and the Managing Director of Air India that the company is ready to take on competition shows the willingness of the public sector to rededicate itself to passenger friendly amenities including the tariff.

The government's decision to open the overseas route to private airliners would trigger a healthy competition in the sector.

Let this be a New Year gift to the passengers as well, not solely to the private players.
