Hyderabad , Jan. 4

THE Association of Otolaryngologists of India (AOI) with a membership of over 4,000 medical specialists dealing with problems of ear, nose and throat (ENT) is holding its five-day annual conference - AOICON-2005 - here from Thursday, according to the Association President, Dr T.V. Krishna Rao.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Dr Rao said the annual conference was aimed at ensuring continuous medical education and upgradation of professional knowledge and technical skills of ENT specialists across the country.

About 2,500 delegates from different parts of the country and abroad have registered to participate in the scientific sessions. Apart from a delegation of 20 ENT surgeons from Bangladesh, several from other SAARC countries would participate, Dr Rao said.

The annual conference would also have a trade exhibition in which about 100 different organisations would participate. Stating that almost every third hearing-challenged person in the world is from the South East Asian region, estimated at over 110 million of the world's 250 million such people, Dr Rao said nearly 80 per cent of the cases were of congenital nature and can be treated if diagnosed at early stages, thanks to fast evolving technologies.

Apart from detailed deliberations on recent advances in ENT diseases, the conference would also organise programmes on latest surgical techniques in the field by leading global specialists, Dr Rao said.
