Problems of plenty

H. Vibhu

A buyer picking Nendran bananas in Aluva, Kerala. Following a glut in the market, banana prices have crashed to Rs 7.50 a kg this week at the Aluva market from Rs. 14 a week ago. This has forced the Vegetable and Fruit Promotion Council in the State to decide on setting up three new banana chips-making units. These will have a capacity to process two tonnes of bananas daily. The council will procure bananas at Rs 8 a kg from about 20,000 farmers.
