Natural Calamities CII keen to adopt tsunami-hit villages R.Y. Narayanan
Coimbatore , Jan. 5 THE Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Coimbatore Zone, is keen to adopt a few villages in Tamil Nadu ravaged by the tsunami. It is also hopeful that corporates will come forward to adopt villages hit hard by the calamity. Mr Krishna Samaraj, Chairman, CII (Coimbatore Zone), told Business Line that his organisation is interested in formulating a long-term plan to rehabilitate villages in Tamil Nadu. He, however, added that the plan is at a preliminary stage. He said the CII is also interested in restoring infrastructure such as school buildings that were damaged when seawater entered the villages. Mr Samaraj said he is also holding discussions as to whether it is possible to pump out saltwater from the drinking water wells in the coastal hamlets, so that people can have access to drinking water. If such an exercise is considered feasible, then pumpsets and other accessories needed could be sent from here. Mr Samaraj said the two-day collection camp organised by CII in Coimbatore following the request made by the State government for assistance drew an enthusiastic response from CII members as well as the general public. While the value of relief materials donated was worth about Rs 10 lakh, the cash donation received was more than Rs 10 lakh. He said on the basis of the request made by government officials, the CII had asked its members to contribute specific goods such as cooking vessels, water tanks, bedding and children's clothing. These have been distributed to the affected people living in the areas surrounding Nagapattinam in the past few days. He said the cash donation received here would be sent to the CII headquarters in New Delhi, which is mobilising funds at the national level for providing assistance to the affected people. He expected the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Tamil Nadu to be major beneficiaries of this assistance.
