Marketfed to procure pepper

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala State Cooperative Marketing Federation (Marketfed) proposes to start procuring pepper from small farmers next week.

Announcing this here, an official spokesman said farmers would get Rs 75 for a kg of pepper from the procurement agency. Only those who cultivate less than two hectares of land will be eligible to benefit from the procurement scheme.

The Chief Minister, Mr Oommen Chandy, had convened a high-level meeting here to discuss the implementation of the programme.

Marketfed will get the required funds from the State Cooperative Bank. The procured pepper will not be released into the local market for a period of the next three months.
