Bangalore , Jan. 6

THE Bangalore Chamber of Industry & Commerce (BCIC) and the Karnataka Government on Thursday entered into an MoU to jointly work for the economic development of the State.

The three-year MoU symbolising public-private partnership was signed with the Department of Commerce & Industries. It will primarily enable the two to take joint initiatives in growth sectors, labour law reforms, SME-friendly policies and promotion; and equitable growth of the three regions in the State, according to BCIC.

The two plan to set up a joint task force to work out a structural framework to implement the plans. BCIC will adopt select backward districts of northern Karnataka to put them on the road to intensive industrial investment and economic development.

Among the proposals are the upgradation of polytechnics, tool rooms and vocational training institutes. The industry would be encouraged to adopt industrial training institutes (ITIs) and convert them into centres of excellence.

"The MoU will effectively facilitate government-industry partnership in the attainment of our common objective to take the State's economy on a higher growth path," said BCIC President, Mr S. Chandrasekhar.

The chamber in its 25 years of existence has worked closely with the Government in formulating policies that have had positive outcome for the industrial growth of Karnataka, he said. It has played a key role in the introduction of the first State-level industrial policy, agro and food processing policy and the food parks; electricity reforms, additional direct international flights and the upgradation of the existing international airport.

The MoU will also address the issues relating to labour reforms and ensure a conducive environment for the smooth running of enterprises.

BCIC would now network in the country and abroad to promote the Karnataka brand through improved trade and investment.

The MoU was signed in the presence of the Deputy Chief Minister, Mr Siddaramaiah, the Industries and Infrastructure Minister, Mr P.G.R. Sindhia.
