Strike at Benapole warehouse hits exports to Bangladesh

Our Bureau

Kolkata , Jan. 7

EXPORTS to Bangladesh by land through the Petrapole (India)-Benapole (Bangladesh) border point have remained suspended for about a week now, reportedly due to the strike by agents operating at the Benapole Customs warehouse in Bangladesh, according to a release issued by the Eastern India Shippers Association (EISA).

The agents in Bangladesh are protesting against the reportedly hefty hike in warehousing charges and parking fees at the Benapole Customs warehouse.

Expressing grave concern at the situation prevailing at the Petrapole Land Customs Station on this side of the border, Mr Praveen Saraf, Chairman of EISA's sub-committee for exports, in a statement on Friday, said that a large number of Bangladesh-bound trucks carrying exports were stranded, leading to acute congestion and choking of the yard of the Central Warehousing Corporation on the Indian side of the border.

If the crisis were not resolved soon, the situation would only worsen. Mr Saraf urged the Union Commerce Ministry to take up the matter with the appropriate authorities in Bangladesh for an early resumption of trade between the two countries on the route.
