Oilseed crushers to discuss trade barriers

MORE than 250 delegates from 30 countries, including the US, Argentina, Brazil, Europe, China, Malaysia, Indonesia and Japan,are expected to participate in the 74th IASC World Congress 2005. Nearly 400 delegates are likely to take part in the function, being held from January 17 to 20.

The Solvent Extractors' Association of India (SEA) and the Central Organisation for Oil Industry and Trade (COOIT) are jointly hosting the World Congress.

Some of the issues to be taken up are WTO, GMO, sustainability and trade barriers, vision for soya and palm 2020.

The Union Minister for Agriculture and Food, Public Distribution and Consumer Affairs, Mr Sharad Pawar, and the Union Minister for Commerce and Industry, Mr Kamal Nath, will address the delegates.

"This international event is taking place in India almost after two decades and for the second time in the last hundred years, and we have received a very encouraging response from foreign as well as Indian participants," said Mr Sandeep Bajoria, Chairman of the Organising Committee for the World Congress and also President of COOIT.

The next congress will be held in San Francisco in June 2006.
