Chicken, egg prices post fresh gains

G. Gurumurthy

Coimbatore , Jan. 7

POULTRY sector posted fresh gains this week amidst surge in demand for both layer eggs and broiler. The improved sentiment, especially for live chickens, which remained sluggish till last week, has relieved broiler farmers in the State who feel a price sustenance at this level for a couple of months will put the broiler sector on a stable wicket.

The demand perch seen during last week is being remotely attributed to the tsunami effect. Even as a section of the trade feels that part of the price recovery for live birds may be due to shift in consumer preference to meat eating in the backdrop of the tidal wave disaster, there is another viewthat points to the thumb rule that generally, the chicken price will see a surge during January.

``There has been a restrained production of chicks, of late, as part of controlled output by broiler farms but the current surge in price this week may be due to the temporary shift in consumer preference for chicken to fish. But we have to wait and see how the chicken price behaves beyond Pongal festival,'' said Dr P. Selvaraj, Vice-President of the State Broiler Coordination Committee.

According to Dr Selvaraj, who is also the Chairman of the National Egg Coordination Committee's Namakkal zone, the price sustenance beyond Pongal would see the broiler industry through this year. Sensing the demand surge, BCC has upped the farm-gate price of live chicken by Re 1 to Rs 37 on Friday. Indications are that the broiler price will touch Rs 40 over the next few days going by the current market sentiment.

Similarly, the shell egg price continues to be bullish at Rs 1.50 apiece and depending on the cold weather condition in the Northern region, the table egg demand is anticipated to be firm over the next few weeks.

Tsunami relief: The poultry farmers, feed manufacturers and egg trade in the State has decided to contribute Rs 30 lakh towards the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. This amount would be handed over to the Chief Minister next week, according to a press release from the president of Namakkal zone Poultry Feed and Egg Producers Association.

NECC also contributed Rs 5 lakh for the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's Relief Fund.
