VMC allocates Rs 100 cr for Godavari water works

Visakhapatnam , Jan. 7

THE Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (VMC) has allocated Rs 100 crore in the revised estimates for 2004-2005 for expediting the works to receive Godavari waters and Rs 20 crore for purchasing water from the Visakha Industrial Water Supply Company during 2005-2006.

This was stated by Mr P.G.K. Varma, the Chairman of the standing committee, at the council meeting here on Thursday, while introducing the Rs 435-crore budget proposals for 2005-2006.

It may be noted that Godavari waters reached the Kanithi Balancing Reservoir on January 1 and are presently being supplied to the Visakhapatnam steel plant, NTPC Simhadri and other industrial units. The project envisages diversion of 5 tmc ft of Godavari waters to Vizag through the Yeleru canal.

Roughly, half of the water is meant for the VMC. The filtration plant at Narava, pipeline construction and other works would have to be completed for the VMC to receive the water and supply it to citizens. It is expected that the works may be completed in three to four months.

Mr Varma said the VMC had obtained Rs 100 crore from the World Bank under the AP Urban Reforms and Municipal Services Project. The amount would be used for road widening, construction of two flyovers in the city and beautification.

He said the VMC had also allocated Rs 10 crore in the revised budget for 2004-2005 as its contribution for the construction of the Visakha Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS), a super-speciality hospital.
