AP Govt to take up Rs 850-cr Stage II of Vamsadhara project

THE Andhra Pradesh Government will take up the Rs 850-crore, Stage-II of the Vamsadhara project in Srikakulam district, to create an irrigation potential of 1.07 lakh acres.

Work on the long pending project will be taken up now and completed in March 2007, the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, told newspersons here.

Stage-I of the project, started in 1971 has been completed with an irrigation coverage of 1.48 lakh acres. Its main left canal of length 104 km with 69 distributaries utilise 17.84 TMC of water.

Under Stage-II it is contemplated to excavate the right main canal with 33 distributaries requiring 19.4 TMC. Work on this is to be completed by June 2005. It is proposed to divert the needful water from the river Vamsadhara near Katragadda village.

The project on completion is expected to provide drinking water also to about 50,000 people.
