Infrastructure Geodesic to build seven skywalks in Bangalore Our Bureau
Bangalore , Jan. 7 A BANGALORE-based company specialising in design and construction services will construct seven skywalks (footbridges for pedestrians) in the city at an estimated cost of Rs 4.2 crore. The skywalks are part of Geodesic's plans to provide an integrated urban transport system, which includes elevated high-speed roads (freeways) and monorails. The seven skywalks are expected to be completed in three months. At a press conference here on Friday, Mr Srinidhi Anantharaman, Managing Director of Geodesic, said this is part of a long-term plan to provide an integrated plan for the city's infrastructure. He said Geodesic has taken up the project after working on the design in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, and the Bangalore Mahanagar Palike. Increasing pressure on the city's infrastructure make it necessary for the city to take an integrated view of providing lasting solutions, he said. Keeping this in view, Geodesic, in partnership with international specialists providing contemporary public transport solutions, has organised a seminar on Sunday to highlight the need for a transport system that provides flexible solutions to the fast-growing city. Geodesic has entered into a collaboration with PJSI Consultants, Malaysia, and Schlaich Bergermann und Partner, Germany, for a blueprint offering the right mix of urban mass rapid transit system. Mr Srinidhi also indicated that his company would bid for the proposed nine-km-long four-lane elevated freeway between Madiwala Junction and Electronic City. Though the proposal is in an advanced stage of planning, Geodesic is interested in offering an alternative cost-effective lightweight technology to the conventional highway technology using heavy pre-cast concrete. Mr Srinidhi said the seminar would attempt at preparing a blueprint to adopt the technology for providing a transport system that could be easily executed without causing interruption in traffic flow.
