Banks in Dakshina Kannada do Rs 9,072-crore business in H1

BANKS in Dakshina Kannada crossed Rs 9,000 crore business during the first half of the current financial year.

As many as 352 branches of various banks mobilised deposits to the tune of Rs 6,064 crore and extended Rs 3,008 crore advances, registering a business of Rs 9,072 crore during the period.

This was informed at the meeting of the District Consultative Committee for Banking Development here on Tuesday. Syndicate Bankorganised the meet.

Though the priority sector advance in the district stood at 56 per cent against the target of 40 per cent, lending to agriculture to the total advances was at 16 per cent against the target of 18 per cent.

It was also observed that many banks in the district failed to reach their target on extending agricultural advances. The Regional Manager of Syndicate Bank, Mr B.K. Bhat, urged the bankers to focus on agriculture lending and double it in the next three years.

Disbursement of advances was at 67 per cent in urban centres followed by 18 per cent in rural and 16 per cent in semi-urban centres. Of the Rs 6,064-crore deposit mobilised, urban centres accounted for 68 per cent followed by rural and semi-urban centres at 16 per cent each. It was noted at the meeting that NRE deposits accounted for Rs 1,730.18 crore, constituting 28.52 per cent of total deposits.

The credit-deposit (CD) ratio of banks in the district increased from 45 per cent as on September 30, 2003, to 50 per cent as on September 30, 2004. The CD ratio in rural centres was 54 per cent followed by 49 per cent in urban centres and 47 per cent in semi-urban centres.

The Lead District Manager, Mr A. Gopal, said that the banks have lent Rs 152 crore to 49,234 farmers under the kisan credit card scheme.
