Dairy & Dairy Products NDDB's mega milk project for Karnataka Our Bureau
KATEEL (Dakshina Kannada): THE Dakshina Kannada Cooperative Milk Producers' Union Ltd is planning to set up 70 bulk milk coolers (BMCs) in various parts of the district by 2010 under the National Dairy Development Board-sponsored mega milk project for Karnataka. Speaking on `dairy farming' at `Krishi Mela', organised by the Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP) at Kateel in Dakshina Kannada district on Friday, the President of the union, Mr B. Niranjan, said the National Dairy Development Board has sanctioned Rs 250 crore for Karnataka for the implementation of the mega milk project. The project involves upgrading infrastructure for producing value-added milk products. The Dakshina Kannada Cooperative Milk Producers' Union Ltd, which has 10 BMCs in the district, has submitted two project proposals for setting up 70 BMCs in the district. Mr Niranjan urged farmers to bring down the production cost to increase their profit. Most of the farmers in the region are bringing fodder from neighbouring district, which adds to the production cost. Farmers should take steps to grow fodder in their farms, he said.
