IIM K statistics meet

THE IIM Kozhikode (IIM K) has organised an International Conference on Reliability, Statistics and related fields.

The conference - sponsored by the Union Ministry of Human Resources Development (HRD) - is meant to provide a platform for both theoreticians and practitioners to interact, exchange theoretical developments and explore the challenges faced by practitioners.

Reliability is an area, which is extensively studied by researchers and used in the industry by practitioners, a press release from IIM K said. During the past four decades, a number of mathematical and statistical models of reliability have been studied.

A group of faculty members at IIM K is investigating a research project for modelling reliability, which is sponsored by the Ministry of HRD under a thrust area scheme of the Union Government. During the conference, Dr Jayant V. Deshpande, University of Pune, discussed `The proportional hazards model in Reliability and Nonparametric Inference for the constant of proportionality' and Dr Bikas K. Sinha, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, spoke on `Inference for Exponential Mean based on broken samples.'

Other speakers were Dr S. Chakraborty, Director, Jaipuria Institute of Management and Dr S. P. Mukherjee, University of Calcutta.

The conference saw industry participation from Mahindra & Mahindra, Air Deccan, Jet Airways, Defence Research and Development Organisation , Department of Defence Production, Reliance Industries and Bhabha Atomic Research centre.

The international participants were from Victoria Management School, New Zealand, Universitaet Kiel, Germany, University of Waterloo, Canada, School of Aerospace and Naval Architecture, South Korea, and University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh .
