THE Mining, Geological & Metallurgical Institute of India (MGMI) has emphasised the need for familiarisation with the use of information technology in the mining industry, so as to improve productivity and safety in mining operations.
In a bid to create awareness on this aspect among senior executives in this industry, the institute organised a two-day executive development programme on "Application of information technology for mine planning and design".
The programme was organised last weekend, jointly with the Department of Mining & Geology of the Bengal Engineering and Science University (BESU). Incidentally, both the organisations are celebrating their Centenary during 2005-06.
According to Mr L.K. Bose, Chairman of MGMI's Kolkata branch, the training module for the programme was designed covering various applications of computer such as geographic information system (GIS), global positioning system (GPS), remote sensing and computerised mine planning & design for professionals engaged in mining sector.
The faculty members were drawn from the mining department of BESU, CMC Ltd, MECON, SRG Consultants, while participants came from all the eight subsidiaries of Coal India Ltd and Indal. Based on the experience gained in organising the programme, the institute has decided to organise more such programmes for the benefit of executives in the industry, Mr Bose said.
