THE Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh's, Economic Advisory Council (EAC) met on Monday for the first time here to discuss proposals with regard to taxation and other current economic issues.
"The council discussed wide ranging issues including price situation, taxation, employment guarantee scheme and developments in the external sector,'' the panel's Chairman, Dr C. Rangarajan, told reporters after the meeting.
The EAC, which was formally constituted on December 29, would also come out with monthly reports on the economy, which would be submitted to the Prime Minister, he added.
Dr Rangarajan said that the Council's role would be only to `advice' and not to take over the functions of either the Finance Ministry or the Planning Commission. "We will take a holistic view and keep in touch with the other Ministries", he said.
Other EAC members who attended today's meeting included the Director of the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy, Dr M. Govinda Rao, the former Director of the Delhi School of Economics, Prof Suresh D. Tendulkar, the Vice-Chancellor of the Jawaharlal Nehru University, Dr G.K. Chadha. and the Chief Economist of ICRAS Ltd, Mr Saumitra Chaudhuri.
