Mobile rural India

This is with reference to the article, "Long distance calls to cost less on ADC cut" (Business Line, January 7).

The decision will benefit a large number of telecom subscribers. But it cannot completely eliminate the possibility of a grey market on incoming ILD calls. Moreover, a level-playing field does not exist.

T. V. Ramachandran, Director General, Cellular Operators Association welcoming the announcement lamented that it was `too little, too late'.

In this context, the editorial "Why not mobiles for Rural India?" (Business Line, January 7) has made the right suggestion. The mobile phone has become a shining symbol of our resurgent economy. And in rural India it could prove very useful to farmers and farm workers.

The government should persuade existing operators with concessions, if necessary, to install mobile towers and connect rural areas to the cellular circuit.
