Sprint ties up with Reliance Info

V. Rishi Kumar

Hyderabad , Jan.11

SPRINT, the $26-billion global telecom services provider, is bullish on India operations and has adopted an innovative `follow-the-customer' strategy providing seamless services.

The President of Sprint, Strategic Marketing Group, Mr Paget L.Alves, told Business Line that the Asia-Pacific region, particularly India, China and Korea have emerged as major potential growth areas calling for a specialised focus in the region.

"Large customers expect such services irrespective of where they are located. In India, we have partnered with Reliance Infocomm, which has emerged as one of the largest CDMA-based services provider. Through their partnership, we are offering IP (Internet protocol)-based network services that extends and serves as a VPN (virtual private network) for these corporations," he explained.

"The reason many corporations prefer an IP-based network is it ensures consistent quality. Just as we provide wireless services for about 35 million users in the US backed by a CDMA-based network, we now plan to offer these services in India too. The partnership with Reliance is strategic, while we bring in customers they do not have now, the alliance helps us tap new customer base as well," Mr Alves said.

"In fact, we are not late entrants into the Indian market. We have presence in India through Sprint operations. The Asian market has been extremely competitive and pretty crowded too. Several services have been commoditised and there is lot more supply than demand. Even undersea cable services have been commoditised. We expect some consolidation and changes in the sector," he said.
