Taxing educational institutions

This refers to the article on the ICAI's suggestion for taxing educational institutions run on commercial basis (Business Line January 9).

It is a fact that many of the educational institutions are run on commercial basis and very few are truly imparting education on a charitable basis.

If the institutions run on a commercial basis are subject to tax, the Union Finance Ministry will surely be able to raise substantial revenue for the Government year after year.

Since these educational institutions are run by politically influential personalities, it would be a challenging task on the part of government to implement such proposal.
