NETworking for tsunami relief

Vinson Kurian

Thiruvananthapuram , Jan. 12

CHENNAI-BASED BridgeOverTW, an online media solutions firm, has joined hands with leading Indian Internet media firms to help raise funds for Irish Red Cross towards tsunami relief.

BridgeOverTW was approached by Mr George Thomas, Media Manager, Ireland Communication and Advertising Network (ICAN), upon which it proceeded to coordinate the campaign to request people to donate.

The campaign has since been mounted on participating popular Indian web sites including Baazee.com, Rediff.com, Chennaionline.com, Jobstreet. com, Keralakaumudi.com, Galataa.com, SMSJunction. com, Tulleeho.com, aaramthinai.com and Chaturangam.com.

BridgeOverTW is expecting other web sites to join in the effort, a spokesman for the company told Business Line. People from across the world have written to web sites and media asking about how they could help.

From multinational portals to private blogs, every person on the Internet is spreading the word providing links and information on how to help. Some initiatives taken up by the online media community include the following: Cricinfo (www.cricket.org) , the leading portal on cricket, has a direct link to ICC's (International Cricket Committee) designated tsunami charity. Worldvision posted the campaign live during the telecast of the World Cricket Tsunami Appeal Match in Melbourne; Sulekha (www.sulekha.com) , a NRI portal has partnered with CARE and AID (Association for India's Development). It collected over $700,000 as of Monday, January 10, with Sulekha.com matching the contributions made by individuals; Baazee (www.baazee.com) has partnered with CRY where people can make direct contributions. Also, it has invited personalities from Bollywood to spare memorabilia such as costumes and merchandise for auction.

Web publishers can set up their own relief funds in association with any of the major aid organisations or the Prime Minister's Relief Fund itself.

BridgeOverTW's online solutions team has set up a separate cell to create more awareness by increasing the number of websites for the current and other planned campaigns.
