Kochi , Jan. 12

THE Indian Institute of Management, Kozhikode, (IIM-K) is organising a two-day finance seminar `Arthanomics 2005' on January 15 and 16 at its campus. The sponsors of the event are UTI Bank and Mahindra.

The finance student interest group at IIM-K, Financially Yours, is organising the seminar. The talks will centre around the theme `Risk vs. Reward - Exploring opportunities and business challenges.'

Till recently, India had a tightly regulated financial system with lending and borrowing rates being fixed, and the Indian financial system did not trade in many instruments. Neither did it have many players outside the public sector banks.

Hence, risk management hadn't been given the focus that was given in other financial markets.

But with complex cross-border financial transactions and increasing use of sophisticated financial instruments, risk management has become more challenging than ever.

The seminar will present the latest techniques in integrated risk management and highlight the challenges that managers' face.

It will have eminent speakers from the industry discussing topics such as `Derivatives: Dynamic risk management in financial markets', `Financial Engineering: A tool for risk management', `Risk management system for mutual funds and wealth managers', `Insurance analytics: actuarial methods for financial risk management' and `Basel II: Multiple dimensions of risk.

Senior officials from Citibank India, Geojit Securities, IRDA, JK Industries, Kanbay India, IDBI Bank, UTI Bank, Clearing Corporation of India Ltd, Bank of America, Standard Chartered Mutual Fund are expected to participate.
