Thiruvananthapuram , Jan. 12

THE Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is organising a two-day national seminar on bioinformatics (BIOS 2005) here on Monday and Tuesday next.

The IEEE International President, Mr Cleon Anderson, will inaugurate the seminar. Close to 200 delegates and speakers from around the country are expected to attend the seminar, said Mr Subodh P.S., Convenor, Organising Committee, BIOS 2005.

Dr Ashok S. Kolaskar, Chairman, National Task Force on Bioinformatics and Vice-Chancellor, Pune University, will be the keynote speaker for the seminar. Dr Kolaskar is an international authority in the field of bioinformatics with over 20 years of research experience and chairs several scientific societies worldwide.

Among the prominent scientists and researchers speaking are Dr Guruprasad, Head of Bioinformatics, Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad; Dr Narayana Rao, Scientist, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai; Prof Ganeshaiah from Bangalore; and Dr Sharmila Mande from Hyderabad.

Further information is available on www.ieee.org/kerala.

Bioinformatics is an area of active interest to both biologists and informatics professionals. It applies the tools of computer science and information technology to solve complex problems in molecular biology, including developing models and algorithms and creating databases.

The National Bioinformatics Policy described bioinformatics as the `defining scientific endeavour of the twenty-first century.' The National Association of Software and Service Companies (Nasscom) emphasises the importance of this branch of opportunity by predicting that bioinformatics is poised to rival the IT industry in its pace of growth.

The IEEE, started in the year 1884 by Thomas Alwa Edison and Alexander Graham Bell, among others, is today the world's largest professional body and a leading authority in technology.
