Events Nasscom chants animation mantra; sees India as a hub Our Bureau
Hyderabad , Jan. 12 THE National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom) on Wednesday called for a concerted effort of the industry, academia and Governments to tap the huge potential in the global animation industry. Speaking at the two-day Animation India 2005, the Nasscom President, Dr Kiran Karnik, said that India has a thriving entertainment industry and a booming IT sector and animation is at the confluence of these. Funding is difficult to come by in this sector but lately global venture capitalists are looking at the animation industry to park their funds. "It was high time we considered tapping the latent potential of this sector. Given the current industry size and the dearth of talent, only a concerted effort would help unlock the potential of the sector. "Together, while the animation and gaming industry estimated at about $23 billion, the Indian share is negligible," he said. Referring to the flagship IT event of Nasscom, "The Indian Leadership Summit", to be held in February, Dr Karnik said apart from taking stock of the sector performance, areas such as innovation for globalisation, global power shifts - India and China as power houses of 21st century, CEO and ITES-BPO conclaves have been lined up. Coinciding with the event, the Nasscom has chosen five leaders for global leadership awards. These awardees would be Mr Craig R. Barret, CEO of Intel, Ms Carly Fiorina, Chairman and CEO of Hewlett-Packard, Mr Masamoto Yahira, Chairman and President and CEO of Shinsei Bank, Mr Stephen Green, Group CEO of HSBC Holdings plc, and Mr Henrich V. Pierer, President and CEO of Siemens AG, for innovation.
