SER freight loading, earnings up in April-Dec

AN estimated 43 per cent growth in the throughput of iron ore for exports, 11.5 per cent growth in the movement of ore for domestic consumers, more than 21 per cent growth in POL traffic and 2.5 per cent growth in finished steel, among other things, helped the South Eastern Railway (SER), a major freight loading zonal railway, post an impressive growth in freight loading as well as earning between April and December 2004, according to SER sources.

During the period, the iron ore traffic for exports was 5.03 million tonnes (mt) against 3.5 mt in the same period of last year, ore for domestic movement was 10.55 mt (9.46 mt), POL traffic 1.2 mt (0.99 mt) and finished steel 4.94 mt (4.82 mt).

Cumulatively, the total throughput at 53.17 mt of originating traffic against the target of 52.73 mt showed an improvement of 0.8 per cent. As compared to the same period last year when the throughput of originating traffic was 50.85 mt, the growth was 4.56 per cent. In December 2004 alone, SER handled 6.69 mt against 5.82 mt in the corresponding month of the previous year.

Revenuewise, the performance was better than targeted. The total earning during the period was Rs 2,160 crore against the target of Rs 2,031 crore, up by 6.33 per cent.

As compared to the same period last year when the earning was Rs 1,950 crore, the growth was more than 10 per cent.
