Arts & Crafts Art auction to raise funds for Asiatic Society Our Bureau
Mumbai , Jan. 13 JANUARY 21 will see a novel fund-raising art auction at the Town Hall, listed among Mumbai's finest heritage structures. The auction aims to raise substantial funds for the benefit of the Asiatic Society, which is celebrating its Bicentenary. Mallika Sagar of Christies will conduct the auction, according to a press release. A public preview of the works is being hosted on January 19 at the Durbar Hall of the Asiatic Society. Recent works of leading Indian artists such as M.F. Husain, Paresh Maity, Manjit Bawa, T.V. Santosh, Jogen Chowdhury, Sudhir Patwardhan, Sanjay Bhattacharya, Arpana Caur, among others will be auctioned. The auction will also include a selection of artists' books, created specially for the auction. Funds raised will go towards the restoration and preservation of Society's holdings. Vintage works by Akbar Padamsee, S.H. Raza and M.F. Husain too will be available for auction. "Asiatic Society is a much venerated institution connected with education and research," said Mr Hemendra Kothari, Chairman, DSP Merrill Lynch Ltd. "We would like to see more corporates come forward and support the Asiatic Society as well as its rich cultural and historical legacy," he added. According to Mr Rajan Jayakar, Vice-President and Chairman of the Events Committee of the Society, "This auction is unique not only because of the extraordinary line up of artists, but also because it is the first event of its nature to be held in the Town Hall.We have hosted several cultural events as a part of our Bicentenary Celebrations." The Asiatic Society of Mumbai was founded in 1804 as the Literary Society by Sir James Mackintosh, a lawyer and jurist. The Society forms a part of the network of institutions created in the 1800s in Mumbai for the study of Indology and dissemination of knowledge about India and the Orient. The auction is organised by Art Edge and sponsored by DSP Merrill Lynch, the release said.
