Events MS Research begins work on projects Our Bureau
Bangalore , Jan. 13 MICROSOFT Research India has officially commenced its operations and inaugurated its TechVista 2005: Computing for Tomorrow, the first in a series of annual symposiums. The event aims to bring researchers from around the world providing them a platform to showcase their efforts. Speakers at the symposium would include Mr Rick Rashid, senior Vice-President of Microsoft Research, Mr Butler Lampson, a senior computer scientist and Mr Daniel T. Ling, corporate Vice-President-Microsoft Research, and panel discussions on `Research and Research Education in India' and `Technologies for Emerging Markets.' To catalyse research activities in the country, MSRI has already initiated various projects in Indian universities including the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, Indian Institute of Technology, Bangalore, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai. Several projects that focus on diverse areas such as wireless sensor-based water resource management network for monitoring and control of irrigation, sensor networks for landslide disaster detection and ethnographic studies of ICT for development have been selected. MSRI has awarded $250,000 in total funding for these projects. "Microsoft Research India's funding of ICT projects is an example of our commitment to collaborating with Indian academia. I see this engagement becoming even stronger in the future. We expect to make significant investments on research being done here," Mr Rashid said.
