MPEDA plea to eat more fish

Our Bureau

Kochi , Jan. 16

AMIDST apprehensions among fish consumers regarding the quality of fish after the tsunami onslaught and reports that fish consumption has come down, MPEDA has come out with a campaign `consume more fish and help the fishing community'.

In a statement issued here, MPEDA said that it would like to "inform fish lovers and fish consumers that there is absolutely no harm in using fish after the tsunami impact and this has been further reiterated by scientific institutions such as Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, Central Institute of Fisheries Technology and health authorities."

The FAO has said in a statement that based on the information available, there is no evidence of epidemiological or of any other nature, of an increased risk of fish - and sea-borne illness in the affected regions.

MPEDA expressed solidarity with the fishermen and their community in this critical hour and requested the fish lovers to consume more fish now, so as to generate more demand, which will fetch better prices to our fishermen.

The authority said that "more than anything else, a better price for fishermen's effort will bring them back to their formal activities and see that the fishing industry is able to tide over the crisis."
