TO establish peace and harmony between the two countries, Pune is taking its first small step to foster better relations with Pakistan with the Indo-Pak Reverence Conference 2005, beginning its week-long conference from Sunday.

The Andhra Pradesh Governor, Mr Sushilkumar Shinde, speaking at the presentation of the `Top Management Awards of Excellence' in the midst of the Pakistan delegation and the crème of Pune, noted that there was a vast scope for developing trade between India and Pakistan, which is being routed through West Asia and Singapore at the moment.

The trade between the two countries is to the tune of Rs 2,000 crore and is expected to touch Rs 10,000 crore within the next three years, once the doors of trade are open and made transparent.

He noted that the Indo-Pak Forum should take the initiative to promote many joint ventures and trading facilities between the two countries.

"It is essential to have people-to-people contact, through business for a better and strong future,'' he said.

The Indo-Pak Forum is an offshoot of the Top Management Consortium (TMC) of Pune, which was started in 1985 at the initiative of the then Chief Secretary of Maharashtra, Mr B.G. Deshmukh.

He noted that the consortium has never worked as a grievance cell but worked as a catalyst in understanding the problems of public and private enterprises and solving their problems.

He added that the TMC would grow into a larger national entity and become an important advisory board in the framing of economic policies of the Government of Maharashtra and India.

The Top Management Awards of Excellence has been given to 11 awardees. These include Mr N.S. Wasu, Chairman, Ganemaco Technologies, Japan; Mr Dilbag Singh Bir, Managing Partner of Neelkanth Jewellers of Pune; Mr G.K. Agarwal, Principal General Manager of BSNL; Dr R.M. Kharche, Managing Director of Maharashtra State Agricultural Marketing Board; Dr Ashok Kolaskar, Vice-Chancellor of University of Pune; Mr A.B. Joshi, Principal Post Master-General; Mr Rajeev Sabde, Senior Journalist of the Marathi paper Sakal; Mr D.V. Vandekar, Station Manager of Indian Airlines; Mr M.S. Vasudevan, Chairman and Managing Director of Vascon Engineers; Mr Atul Goel, President, Emerging Presidents Group and Mr Chandru and Dasi Budhrani, Directors of Budhrani Group of Companies.

The seven-day conference, inaugurated today, is being held with the objective of fostering Indo-Pak reverence, friendship and peace through bilateral trade and joint ventures in various industries, education, media, sports, and cultural exchanges.

It is being organised by the World Foundation on reverence for all life, Pune, in collaboration with the Rotary International and a host of educational, religious and business organisations in Pune, Mr Bahri Malhotra, President of the Foundation, added.
