Pest attack worries cashew cultivators in Perambalur

Our Correspondent

Madurai , Jan. 17

CASHEW cultivators in Perambalur district are worried over the increasing incident of pest attack caused by a pest-tea mosquito bug on their crops.

About 39,000 hectares in the district are under cashew crop. Samples of the damaged leaves of the crops have been collected by the officials of the Agriculture Department to seek experts' opinion to control the attack.

Normally, this attack is said to occur in late January or early February.

According to a cashew grower of Jayamkondam, Mr C. Panneerselvam, the abnormal dew this season has advanced the attack. Ignorance of crop protection methods among the farmers has driven them to apply all sorts of chemical fertilisers. The Horticulture Department should come to the rescue on the crop protection strategy, he said.

Another cashew cultivator and a dealer in fertilisers, Mr A. Gopalakrishnan said that while spraying of endo-sulfan and monocrotophos is sufficient to control the attack, lavish application of other chemicals has resulted in furthering the attack by another pest called sapathi poochi.
