Tax in disguise

This has reference to the article titled "How we are a high-taxed nation" (Business Line, January 13). The analysis of the author is without doubt provocative and an eye-opener.

It is to be recognised that the type of "tax in disguise" described by the author is a world-wide phenomenon. The poor, without the bargaining power, would always be at the receiving end in such a scenario.

In a country where you cannot even easily punish an errant government/public-sector employee and where the labour market is so imperfect, these things have to be accepted, albeit reluctantly, as part of life.
