Earth and space centre at Hyderabad varsity

Our Bureau

Hyderabad , Jan. 18

THE University of Hyderabad has formally launched a Centre for Earth & Space Sciences to bring about synergy between earth, space and information technology and to bridge the digital divide and promote knowledge-driven and job-led economic development of India and the South-East Asia region.

The centre would have centralised research facilities, which would be shared by all universities and research and development laboratories. It would also draw from other faculties and the supercomputing facilities on the campus of the university, according to Prof. K.V. Subba Rao of the centre.

The centre has initiated MoUs with the National Geophysical Research Institute for joint programmes in the oil and gas sectors.

The centre will take up research projects aimed at optimal utilisation of land, water and climate predictability, since India & the South-East Asian region depend heavily on monsoon. Well-known meteorologist, Prof T.N. Krishnamurti and oceanographer and fluid dynamist, Prof. Ruby Krishnamurti of Florida State University, have agreed to help the centre. The idea is to make the best use of the Indian remote sensing satellite.
