Tea Board orders 100 pc e-auction

P.S. Sundar

Coonoor , Jan. 20

THE Tea Board has issued a mandate to all the auction centres in the country to go in for 100 per cent electronic auctions before April 1.

Of this, the three auction centres in the South - Coonoor, Coimbatore and Kochi - will have to conduct all their auctions only through the electronic system from March 1. Another month's time has been given to the North Indian auction centres as the progress of installation of the computers there has been tardy.

In Coonoor and Coimbatore, 25 per cent of the catalogued teas are offered through the e-auctions, while in Kochi, only 10 per cent are so offered, principally because of the preponderance of individual buyers in the dust grades. In Kolkata, the process of computerisation is yet to begin.
