Railways freight revenue rises 10 pc

INDIAN Railways earned Rs 22,229.07 crore by transporting 438.36 million tonnes (mt) of revenue freight for the nine-month period ended December 2004 of the current fiscal, upping its revenues by 10.2 per cent as compared to Rs 20,172.47 crore by transporting 407.15 mt during the corresponding period of the previous year.

Of the total earnings from the freight traffic, Rs 9,431.87 crore came from 198 mt of coal followed by Rs 884.24 crore from 31.83 mt of raw material to steel plants, Rs 1,089.16 crore from 10.67 mt of finished iron and steel from steel plants and Rs 1,048.56 crore from 26.73 mt of iron ore for exports. Another Rs 1,796.04 crore to the total freight revenue accrued from transportation of 39.45 mt of cement, Rs 2,365.34 crore from 34.41 mt of foodgrains, Rs 983.47 crore from 21.52 mt of fertilisers, Rs 2,017.69 crore from 23.43 mt of petroleum oil and lubricant and Rs 2,612.70 crore from 52.32 mt of other goods, according to an official statement.

Meanwhile, earnings in net tonne kilometres (NTKMs) increased by 8.17 per cent from 2,78,477 million NTKMs to 3,01,215 million NTKMs during the period. Earnings per million tonne increased from Rs 49.55 crore in 2003-04 to Rs 50.71 crore, an increase of 2.35 per cent. Earnings per net tonne kilometre also registered an increase of 1.88 per cent from 72.44 paise in 2003-04 to 73.80 paise in the current financial year ended December 2004.
