Spot rubber firm on covering purchases

Our Correspondent

Kottayam , Jan. 21

ALL-ROUND covering purchases kept spot rubber prices firm though the trend was mixed on Friday.

RSS 5, ungraded and ISNR 20 improved on better enquiries while the rest remained unchanged. Covering groups limited their purchases on sheet rubber to avoid another sharp upmove of the grade. Buyers from the general rubber goods sector and small-scale industries were also active throughout the session.

Even the news on fresh imports failed to spoil the market mood as the arrivals were not enough to induce any visible weakness in the prices. RSS 4 was quoted steady at Rs 53.50 a kg at Kottayam and Rs 53 at Kochi as on Thursday.

The NMCE turned weak on Friday. The February contract for RSS 4 per kg was quoted at Rs 53.85 (Rs 54.21); March at Rs 55.20 (Rs 55.41); April at Rs 57.10 (Rs 57.28); and May at Rs 58.10 (Rs 58.30).

At TOCOM, the February futures for RSS 3 weakened a tad to 124.1 yen from 124.3 yen a kg, possibly on weekend profit booking according to sources.

The spot market rates per kg at Kottayam were: RSS-4: Rs 53.50 (Rs 53.50); RSS-5 Rs 52 (Rs 51.50); ungraded Rs 51 (Rs 50.50); ISNR 20 Rs 51.75 (Rs 51.50); and latex 60 per cent Rs 40 (Rs 40).
