New Delhi , Jan. 21

A COMPLETE modernisation of track laying and maintenance has become imperative in view of the Railways' plans to introduce 150-km-per-hour passenger trains and 100-kmph freight trains on certain routes in the next five years, the Railway Board Chairman, Mr R.K. Singh, has said.

At a seminar, Mr Singh said the Railways planned 150-kmph passenger trains on the Delhi-Chennai and Delhi-Patna-Howrah routes and 100-kmph freight trains on the high-density Golden Quadrilateral tracks, connecting the four metros, within the next five years.

Observing that 40 per cent of the total investment on Indian Railways related to tracks and its maintenance alone, the Minister of State for Railways, Mr Naranbhai Rathwa, said it was necessary to go for all-round modernisation of track laying, maintenance, relaying and railway construction works.
