THE State Government is planning to establish a high-voltage distribution system in the State with an outlay of Rs 5,000 crore in the next five years.
Announcing this here on Friday, the Finance Minister, Mr K. Rosaiah, said sincere efforts should be made to reduce transmission and distribution losses.
Addressing the inaugural of `Save Energy 2005' exhibition, he said the Congress Party didn't study the implications of free power scheme while announcing during elections.
"We sincerely wanted to give free power to our farmers. In that process, we should have studied it well," he said.
"We should have announced that free power would be given to those farmers who used ISI-marked pump sets," he said.
He was referring to the suggestion by the Chairman of Vijai Electricals Ltd, Mr D.J. Ramesh, that the Government bring in a legislation ensuring usage of only efficient pump sets.
"For the last 10-15 years, we have been wasting power worth Rs 30,000 crore every year," he said.
This year, the country could bring down the losses to Rs 17,000 crore.
Keeping this in mind, the Government was planning to bring in standardisation of consumer electric products.
Calling for awareness on energy conservation, he said using cheaper products would be counter-productive.
