`Check smuggling of rubber'

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Chairman of the Kerala State Cooperative Marketing Societies Association, Mr G. Sugunan, has asked the State Government to take immediate steps to check `large-scale' smuggling of natural rubber from the State.

The difference in the rate of sales tax prevailing in the State and that in other States was what encouraged smuggling activity. While the tax was 12.65 per cent in the State, it was only four per cent outside of it. Because of this, the smugglers were able to offer better prices to growers than the rubber marketing societies.
