Madurai division Railways plan mini container service

The Madurai Division of Southern Railway has plans to launch a mini container service to transport 1 to 2 tonnes of goods.

According to the Divisional Railway Manager, Mr B.N. Rajasekhar, the service can be utilised for transporting goods daily from Madurai to Chennai. For speedy transportation of parcels in the goods train, leasing to the private parties is to be introduced.

At the executive committee meeting of Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association (Maditssia), here the other day he said that booking ticket through Internet has evoked good response and added that the small scale industries would be offered a special discount of 15 per cent for supply of products made to the Southern Railway.

The President of Maditssia, Mr S. Aravind, submitted a memorandum on the occasion. It included among others, a reduction in the Tatkal charges for booking tickets from Rs 150 to Rs 100 and arrange to deduct the collection charges from the ticket fare from the respective stations instead of from point to point.
