Events Increased dose of governance urged Our Bureau
Kolkata , Jan. 23 IN this age of a universalised market system, the slogan is "less government." But Mr J.M. Lyngdoh, former Election Commissioner, feels a fractured society needs an increased dose of governance. Delivering the foundation day lecture at the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta, Mr Lyngdoh said, "We cannot continue to have police stations where no decent person would like to go, leave aside making a complaint and risk a case against himself instead." Speaking on the subject Mismatch of More Management and Less Governance Mr Lyngdoh wondered why, despite new technology and management systems, roads had disintegrated and habitations gone dry. He feels that the media is manipulated, which in turn has made the "increasingly prosperous middle class quite fatuous." His advice to the future leaders of the corporate world is to nourish the matrix of good governance. Mr Lyngdoh said, "A combination of governance, management and technology would ensure that the one billion-plus of us do not mere ride out the competitive economic storm in order to survive, but also begin to realise for the first time our potential as a united people."
