Wildlife Programme launched to monitor birds in Kerala Our Bureau
Thiruvananthapuram , Jan. 24 THE Kozhikode-based Malabar Natural History Society, in association with Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History Studies-Coimbatore and the city-based Thanal, is launching a `common birds monitoring programme' in the State. The main objective of the programme is to monitor the status of widely seen common birds and use the information gathered through this process to prepare a strategy for bird conservation in Kerala, said one of the programme's organisers. Despite the growing interest in protecting nature, there is very little information on the status of various birds commonly found in the State. Similarly, very little research has been carried out to understand the impact of deforestation and urbanisation on the State's bird population. The study is intended to address such information gaps, said an organiser. While all birdwatchers and other interested individuals and organisation can participate in the project, the initiative is specially designed to involve school students. In order to obtain reliable estimates of the population size of different species of birds in a specific area, the organisers intend to carry out a census. Those who participate in the project will be given all material required to identify and monitor common birds. The idea is to run this venture for at least one year from February.
