Chennai , Jan. 24 A.M.M. Foundation of the Murugappa group, which has spent more than Rs 2.5 crore towards tsunami relief, is offering fishermen technology to build synthetic catamarans, and other technologies developed by the Sri A.M.M. Murugappa Chettiar Research Centre (MCRC). Mr M.V. Murugappan, MCRC's chairman and managing trustee of the foundation, told reporters here on Monday that the catamaran built with HDPE pipes is cheaper and easier to build than the traditional wooden catamarans, he said. It is a tried and tested technology, and a team from MCRC launched a HDPE catamaran on Sunday at Injambakkam, near Chennai. They are also teaching fishermen the technology to build these catamarans at various locations, he said. The Murugappa group has contributed Rs 1.06 crore to the Prime Minister's fund and Rs 50.65 lakh to the Chief Minister's fund for tsunami relief. In addition they have budgeted Rs 1 crore to relief and rehabilitation, which will continue up to February end. The donations include employees' contribution, he said. A.M.M. Foundation, through which the group has channelled its relief work, is a registered trust that runs educational institutions and hospitals, and is funded from a share of the net profits of the Murugappa group. In 2003-04 its budget was Rs 14 crore.
