Coimbatore , Jan. 24

THE National Oilseeds and Vegetable Oils Development Board has sanctioned a national network research project on jatropha and pungam to the Forest College and Research Institute, Mettupalayam.

The three-year project aims at promoting both these bio-diesel plants.

The Forest College Dean, Mr S.S. Neelakandan, said increasing energy requirements necessitated the search for an alternative non-polluting and safe resource.

Among the various tree borne oilseeds, jatropha and pungam have received much research attention in recent times.

Recognising this development, the Board has sanctioned this project.

The research work would focus on development of new varieties, standardisation of cultural/management packages, testing different intercrops in jatropha and pungam for generating income till the main crop starts generating income, set seed certification standards etc.
