Textiles Industry & Economy - Exports & Imports Dip in December garment exports Our Bureau
New Delhi , Jan. 24 THE maximum utilisation of textile product quotas till November 2004 in certain categories and some ban clamped on a few categories have together caused the garments exports to decline both in volume and in value from India during the final month of the quota regime in global trade in textiles and clothing in December 2004. Figures put out by the Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) here said exports to quota-restricted countries stood at 76.4 million pieces valued at $349 million, as against 95.8 million pieces valued at $409.2 million in December, 2003, registering a decline of 20.25 per cent in terms of volume and 14.71 per cent in terms of value. Readymade garment exports to the US, the single biggest market for Indian garments, saw a decline of 46.25 per cent in terms of volume and an equally hefty 42.29 per cent in terms of value at 19.8 millions pieces and $100.7 million respectively in December, 2004. When contacted, the AEPC Chairman, Mr A. Saktivel, told Business Line here that almost in all major categories, quotas were exhausted in November 2004 itself, while in some categories such as men T-shirts and undergarments, some ban was clamped by importing countries, which also resulted in poor offtake abroad during December 2004 from Indian exporters.
