Plea to BSNL on tariff hike

Our Bureau

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) Employees' Union has urged the public sector telecom major to drop its reported move for hiking telephone tariff.

A spokesman for the union said here that the move was apparently aimed to compensate the loss in revenue to BSNL following the regulator's decision to slash access deficit charges (ADC) payable to the former by private telephone companies.

But, the Centre had earlier justified its decision to allow private companies to operate by arguing that competition would bring down telecom tariffs to the benefit of the subscriber.
